What Is Equine Gestalt Coaching — and How Is It Different from Equine Therapy?

When people first hear about what we do at Heart Bridge Initiative, the questions tend to follow a familiar sequence. First comes the curiosity — something about horses and healing that resonates before the rational mind has a chance to catch up. Then comes the question: "But what exactly is it? Is it like therapy? Do I have to ride?"

They are good questions. The landscape of equine-assisted approaches has grown considerably in recent years, and the terminology can be genuinely confusing. Equine therapy. Equine-facilitated psychotherapy. Horse-assisted coaching. Equine Gestalt Coaching. These terms are sometimes used interchangeably in ways that obscure real and important differences.

So let us take the time to answer properly — because understanding what Equine Gestalt Coaching actually is, and what distinguishes it from other approaches, is the first step toward understanding whether it might be the right next step for you.

What Equine Gestalt Coaching Is — and Is Not

The Equine Gestalt Coaching Method — EGCM — was developed by Melisa Pearce of Touched by a Horse in the United States. It is a coaching methodology, not a therapy. This distinction matters, and it is worth being clear about it.

Equine therapy — more formally, Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy or EFP — is a clinical modality practiced by licensed mental health professionals. It is designed to diagnose and treat specific psychological conditions, and it operates within a clinical framework governed by professional licensing bodies. If you are seeking treatment for a clinical mental health condition, a licensed therapist is the appropriate practitioner.

Equine Gestalt Coaching, by contrast, operates in the space of personal growth, transformation, and the honest exploration of one's inner life. It does not diagnose or treat. It does not require a presenting problem or a clinical history. What it requires is a willingness to show up — genuinely, as you are — and to engage with a process that will meet you exactly where you are and invite you toward something more.

It is also, emphatically, not a riding programme. You will never be asked to get on a horse. All EGCM work happens on the ground, in relationship — and the horse's role in that relationship is not incidental. It is central.

In Equine Gestalt Coaching, the horse is not a backdrop or a prop. It is a co-facilitator — an active, sentient, extraordinarily perceptive participant in your process of self-discovery.

The Gestalt Element — Why It Matters

The word "Gestalt" in the methodology's name is not incidental. It comes from the Gestalt school of psychology, founded in the early twentieth century, which holds that human beings can only be fully understood as whole systems — that the sum of our experience is always greater than its individual parts, and that genuine healing requires the integration of body, emotion, mind, and spirit rather than the isolated treatment of any single dimension.

This holistic philosophy is the foundation on which EGCM is built. A session does not focus on one aspect of your experience while setting the others aside. It works with the whole of you — the patterns that show up in your body, the emotions that arise in the moment, the stories you carry about yourself and your life, and the deeper wisdom that becomes accessible when all of these dimensions are engaged simultaneously.

The horse, as a profoundly somatic and present-moment being, naturally facilitates exactly this kind of whole-person engagement. It does not respond to your intellectual analysis of your own situation. It responds to the living reality of your whole system — and in doing so, it draws the whole system into the work in a way that purely cognitive approaches simply cannot reach.

What Actually Happens in a Session

This is the question we are asked most often — and the honest answer is that no two sessions are the same. The methodology follows the client, not a fixed script. What unfolds is always shaped by what you bring into the field on that particular day.

A session typically begins with a period of settling — using HeartMath coherence tools to arrive fully in the present moment, to bring the nervous system into a receptive state, and to establish a genuine quality of presence before any interaction with the horses begins. This grounding period is not preliminary to the real work. It is the first layer of the real work.

From there, the session moves into the field or arena. You may be invited to simply be with the horses — no task, no agenda, simply present. You may be guided through a specific experiential exercise. You may find that one particular horse seeks you out, or moves away, or does something so precisely reflective of your inner state that the insight arrives before you have found words for it.

Your coach is present throughout — not directing the experience, but holding the space, offering observations, and facilitating the integration of whatever arises. The horses do what horses do: they respond, with complete honesty and complete compassion, to exactly who you are in this moment.

Why I Chose This Methodology — and What It Did

I came to EGCM training in 2014 after years of searching for an approach that could explain — and help others navigate — the kind of transformation I had been through. I had studied Western psychology and found it intellectually interesting but experientially insufficient. I had encountered various energy modalities and found nothing that said yes until the evening Sharon forwarded me a note from Wisdom the Horse and something in me simply knew.

The three-year certification programme was unlike anything I had previously experienced in a learning environment. It asked me to do my own shadow work alongside learning to guide others — to be a genuine student of my own inner life as a prerequisite to facilitating anyone else's. The horses were the primary teachers throughout, and their feedback was, as it always is, immediate, precise, and entirely free of the social consideration that shapes most human feedback.

What the methodology gave me — beyond the certification, beyond the skills — was the experiential understanding that I had been searching for since 2004. The framework that explained how genuine transformation actually happens. Not through thinking differently, but through feeling more completely. Not through analysis, but through the lived, embodied, present-moment encounter with one's own truth.

That understanding is the foundation of everything we offer at Heart Bridge Initiative. And the horses — Blue, Allegra, Full Flight, Zorion and Regalo — are its living, breathing, daily embodiment.

What to expect when you come to Heart Bridge Initiative:

You will never be asked to ride a horse or have any prior experience with horses.

Sessions are conducted outdoors, in a natural setting, or in an arena – weather dependent - with our herd of five.

Each session is unique — it follows you, not a predetermined agenda.

HeartMath coherence tools are integrated into every session to support your nervous system throughout.

The pace is unhurried. The space is safe. The horses are ready.

No problem or crisis is required. Curiosity and willingness are entirely sufficient.

Is This for You?

Equine Gestalt Coaching is for anyone who senses that there is more available to them — more calm, more clarity, more genuine connection with themselves and others — and who is willing to explore that possibility in an environment unlike anything they have tried before.

It is for the executive who has achieved everything and still feels empty. The parent who has lost themselves in loving others. The person standing at a crossroads without a map. The health optimiser who has tracked every variable except the one that governs them all. The curious soul who followed an instinct to this page and is not entirely sure why, but is glad they did.

It is, most fundamentally, for anyone willing to be genuinely, honestly, completely themselves in the presence of animals who will receive that truth with complete acceptance — and reflect back, with extraordinary precision and grace, exactly what needs to be seen.
